2015 Hirsch 'West Ridge' Estate Pinot Noir
The West Ridge is a series of hilltop vineyard blocks, spread like vertebrae along a spine, comprising the main ridge of Hirsch. The soils on the West Ridge are highly heterogeneous, ranging from heavy black clay to sand to loam to yellow clay mixed with rock.
The 2015 West Ridge Pinot Noir is a selection of the finest and most expressive blocks on the West Ridge of Hirsch. These are planted to two heritage California Pinot Noir clones: the earthy and ethereal Mt Eden, and the aromatic and floral Swan.
The West Ridge is the most delicate of our wines, with soft tannins and transparent fruit. It is a wine that seduces with complexity and mystery, rather than with power or body.
The extremely low yields in 2015 produced a relatively concentrated West Ridge in comparison with previous vintages. The fruit is extraordinarily pretty, bright and fresh. It promises to be one of the most age-worthy vintages of West Ridge we have ever produced, which will allow the remarkable complexity and exoticism of this wine to unfold. We encourage you to resist its youthful charms and stash a few bottles in the cellar!
