Jasmine and David in 1996 at the Ranch

David and Jasmine at the Vineyard in the early 1990s.

To craft the 2017 Family Blend, we selected three of our most delicious and happiness-inducing barrels from the 2017 vintage. Our goal was to create a wine with the drinkability and lustiness of our Bohan Dillon Pinot, but with heightened concentration and complexity.

We have only made this wine once before, in 2008. In that year, David and Jasmine Hirsch selected six of the very best barrels. This year they chose just three barrels.

One third of the 2017 Family Blend comes from Block 8, arguably the finest single block at Hirsch. It imparts power and lusciousness to the wine. Blocks 6 and 7 (which together form the heart of our West Ridge Pinot Noir) make up another third of the blend. They contribute grace, complexity and high-toned aromatics. Lastly, two of our younger vine parcels, Blocks 16 and 23, give energy and intensity.

The result is a wine that combines hedonism with gravitas. While the Family Blend can certainly age, there is tremendous pleasure to be found in the youthful fruit of this wine, so we recommend trying a bottle soon. Do give it 30 minutes of air before drinking.

We believe this limited selection, available only to our top list members, will give you great satisfaction at a very reasonable price.

A note on the label: The label is a sketch of David Hirsch, in one of his favorite Hawaiian shirts, enjoying a glass of Hirsch Pinot Noir after a long day in the vineyard. This picture is an encapsulation of David’s character: thoughtful and hard-working, yet ever open to the pleasures of a great bottle of wine.
